Skin cancer rates increase at an alarming rate among young people in the West Midlands
Each week, one person aged 15-34 is diagnosed with melanoma in the Midlands, according to recent Cancer Research UK figures. Melanoma is a potentially serious form of skin cancer that, when advanced, can spread and cause death. A total of 825 cases of melanoma are diagnosed across all ages in the West Midlands. Melanoma rates in the West Midlands have risen from 2.8 per 100,000 to 4.2 per 100,000 in the last 20 years. This is a more than 50% increase – higher than for any other cancer.
The rapid rise in melanoma rates can be attributed to our quench for sun both here in the UK and during overseas holidays. Minimising sun exposure can reduce the risk of developing melanoma and other types of skin cancer. Achieving this need not be complex, and simple ways to minimise the skin cancer risk include:
- Avoid sun-burning at all costs
- Do not seek a tan – wear protective clothing and sunscreen during sunny periods and remain in the shade where possible
- Do not use sunbeds
